Bonhams

Bonhams is one of the privately owned British auctions houses that happen to be one of the very oldest and also the largest of the houses of fine arts and antiques.


This is one of the auctions that are known around the world and which many individuals flock to when looking to add to their collections. Bonhams have been holding auctions since 1793 when a well known antique dealer joined up with a book specialist by the name of Walter Bonham. In 2009 this one of the leading houses and announced that it had taken over leadership of the market in areas including antiquities, design, ceramics, miniatures and watches among others. Today Bohams are seen around the world and they have regional representatives in more than twenty five countries. Two of the major ones are held in London in Bond Street and Knightsbridge. While the house is known for many notable there are some worth mentioning. In 1836 there were auctions for a collection of furniture from Buckingham Palace including a stupendous glass dome and gothic lanterns. In 2003 they sold a George Stubbs painting and it sold for £1,931,650 in Bond Street. In 2004 Bonhams held auctions one of which included a superb 18 inch Ming dish from the Honhwu period and this was to set a record for the sale of any Ming Porcelain around the world. Perhaps one of the most notable of auctions was the one for a two seated Vickers Super marine MKIX Spitfire aircraft in 2009. This aircraft was sold for £1,739,500 at the RAF museum in Hendon.

Sothebys

The name Sothebys has been associated with some of the worlds very best auctions and is now split into divisions which include those in the areas of diamonds, institute of art, wine and real estate. Sothebys were founded by Samuel Baker who held the very first of his auctions under his own name. These featured several hundred rare books and sold for a few hundred pounds, a princely sum of money in those days. However this was nothing like the ones in 1983 when Sothebys went on to sell one book for more than 8 million GBP. The scope of Sothebys auctions has come a long way since then.
